Sorry, this is one time I don’t agree with your funnies. Since you have said before you rarely read the boards, I doubt if you are aware of the utter filth this man spewed on his SGT and then on the series of bitchboards he ran. Having read some, most of his time was taken up libeling individuals, yet he thought nothing of threatening all and sundry with law suits and setting a heavy mob on them if they returned to Pattaya. Yeah, I know, you will retort more fool them. Maybe so. But then I doubt you were ever a target of his consuming hatred. You once gave your Turtle Ass Award to the poster known as LMTU, thoroughly deserved in my book. This man Neal though was in a totally different class.
I guess to you the recent posts are just a case of one bunch of Sunnee sewer rats turning on one of their own. Unfortunately they are the truth. But paraphrasing parts of posts made by those who were the targets of his hatred out of context (not always accurately – oops)tars everyone with the same brush. I find that disappointing from a blogger whose site gives so much great information and fun to readers.
Sorry Nick, but I am aware of how toxic he was to the on-line community – whether that was his nature or a side effect of his deplorable health. And this cartoon in no way excuses him for those actions. Grilling the man after he is dead (and can no longer defend himself) however . . . well, the humor in that is in the irony.
Mitch S.said:
Your best comic yet! You certainly had an abundance of material to work with, so I guess no space left to add BooHoo? “Someone died??? Oh! He was a saint who will be truly missed. Although I never met him, I do so want to attend his memorial service, funeral or cremation.”
I hope Fountainbore goes back into hiding (second only to Scottish Jerk on my list of worst posters). Of course, if I had insomnia, reading a few pages from Fountainbore on Malaysia 370 seating choices, food service, and duty free shopping would put me right to sleep.
lol
You must then be me Mitch – it was difficult not throwing Boo Hoo into this one.
But there’s hope, he may still speak up and there’s always next Sunday’s funnies.
Nicksaid:
What is funny is that after you slagged off Board posters like LMTU and now Neal Woteverisnamewas, you allow some posts in your own columns from readers/posters who have some sharp axes to grind. Mention of Bucky, Timmy and Fountainbore seems to put Mitch S. very much into one ‘bitchy’ board – er, column!
Actually I find this sad. 2 or 3 of the Boards have recently met their maker, and the others can’t be far behind. Just take a look at the number and quality of posts. Down, down down! Bangkok and Pattaya sex trip reports on one which used to have a variety of interesting Asian travel posts and hotel deal info (thanks to one I got 70% off a great 5-star hotel in Tokyo), or constant bitching and moaning on others. Either social media or age of posters will kill the Boards sooner than later. So why do you bother to give them more oxygen by constant references here? Bangkokbois has a great reputation for quality. Please don’t let it be dragged into the mud.
It was a cartoon, not a ringing endorsement of the man’s life. Besides I’m an equal opportunity slagger offer – provided the person I’m snarking on is alive and able to respond if he so chooses (which several posters have in the past). As for comments, I have always had a policy to not delete any comment posted to this blog (provided it wasn’t spam).
You are right about the boards these days; I’m not sure why so few bother to post though it probably is a combination of aging members, an overabundance of threads on prostitution, and old-timers still trying to settle scores with their fellow posters. Not much there to attract a newbie. But they still play a role and like many others I still read them.
Thanks for your thoughts Nick. I always appreciate hearing from regular readers and occasionally even pay attention – ya’ll finally got some twinks, right?
🙂
Nicksaid:
Not sure I understand the last phrase, but for sure I am pretty satisfied with my lot! 🙂
Last issue on the boards front. Blogs about Thailand are great because they are essentially one guy’s observations. Readers either like them or not – and that’s that. The boards by their very nature, tho, offer a variety of thoughts and experiences from different people and posts vary from one-liners to lengthy discussions. Each Board used to have its own identity more or less, and despite occasional hydras and other annoyances, I thought each Board’s members were probably reasonably happy with things as they stood.
As I see it, the problem in the last 2-3 years boils down to 3 main factors. Anonymous bitching about specific posters has become vastly more prevalent and hard-hitting, and it’s not just one specific Board commenting on another. Every post on every Board is now fair game for the others – as well as well-read bloggers! Second there are posters who now join all the Boards diluting the differences. Most are now largely Pattaya-centric with little about the rest of the country. Then there’s another of your Turtle Ass Awardees Beachlover and his clones whose sole purpose seemed to be massive idiotic posting and destruction.
I doubt anyone really knows why there are now less posters, but I have my suspicions. Some existing ones who are constantly bitched about outside their own forum surely get pissed off eventually. Then there are the potential newbies who, seeing the bitching, decide it’s just not worth the effort. Simplistic? Sure. And sure, boards are public forums and that opens them up for comment and ridicule. No doubt some say it’s just part of being up there on the internet. Maybe. I for one would not wish to have contributions held up to ridicule by those who clearly did not actually read them, the thread they formed a part of and the nature of the discussion enjoyed by most of that board’s members. But that’s what now happens too many times. Even with major changes, I just cannot see how the existing ones will continue – well, to exist! RIP?
I agree that at one time each of the boards had its own personality, which is no more. But I also think those bitchy posts about other posters have always been part of the scene too – there just was once enough other content you didn’t notice it so much. Ditto for the focus on Pattaya – there used to be other areas covered, now not so much. Which is one of my problems – for a newbie who doesn’t know better he’d read those posts and think that’s how things operate in Bangkok too.
I liked Surfcrest’s move of having a forum just for bitching. Unfortunately, if it still existed and you moved all of those posts to it there’d be little left on the other forums. But I do agree with you that the tenor of many threads keeps new members from joining in.
Besides, if you want snark, that’s what this blog is for.
🙂

“Don’t feed the trolls.”
“SUNDAY FUNNIES #78” deals with the gay Thailand message boards as do, hmmm, what percentage of the previous 77 comics? Keep up the good work!
My comments on here are on a variety of your posts. I haven’t been a poster on any gay Thailand message board for years, and I rarely posted then. Certainly no axes to grind, but my comments here on the remaining posters are reality-based (vs. false assertions such as you making “constant references” to the boards or some unsupportable reference to your blog’s “reputation”).
When Gaybutt reaches 10,000 posts on his “blog with supportive & approved comments from the peanut gallery” (vs. an actual message board), it might be time for another award from you!
. . . or at least another Sunday Funnies cartoon dedicated to Jabba.
Nicksaid:
I’m curious. Since you do not post and have “no axe to grind”, why do you feel it necessary to comment on specific posters out of context when the majority of posters on the boards they belong to seem to be content with their contributions? If you don’t like posts or a particular writing style/length, why not contribute and say so on that forum? Then the members themselves can comment on your comments. You list three posters you clearly don’t enjoy – and you are not alone in that! But why bother reading them in the first place? By slagging here about them, that seems to me to be at least some evidence of an axe lurking somewhere!
Mitch S.said:
What I read and where I chose to comment is none of your business. I post here to thank Rush for his efforts and to try to get a laugh out of him. I’ve been doing so since the start of his blog.
If you don’t like my comments, then take your own advise and don’t read them. If you don’t agree with Rush’s cartoons, then spare your little mind the burden.
“Out of context” is wrong. My first post on this cartoon was completely in context of Rush’s cartoon. Are you dumb or just a troll?
Yet another unsupportable comment: “majority of posters on the boards they belong to seem to be content.” Based on what? Lack of responses on the subject, comments in support of the problem posters, your extensive polling on the subject, or obvious baloney? Majority? Give me a break. Just more flawed logic from an obvious troll.
I’ll try to explain to you in small words so you can follow along: The reason message boards have readers who do not post is because of people just like you.
Nicksaid:
Always amusing when those who slag others generally first distort and then never answer the questions posed of them! You clearly have an ‘axe’ in hand.
My comment about the “majority” of those who presently post on the various boards seeming to be content, no matter how many or how few, is surely more than self-evident. If they weren’t, they’d no longer be posting. And how you can assert that message boards have readers who do not post is because of people just like me is perfectly laughable. A troll I am not.
