Friday was a banner day for Team USA. Though we only added three more gold medals to our count – bringing the total to 21 – we edged in front on China by one. Michael Phelps won the 100m butterfly, his third consecutive gold medal in that event, and Missy Franklin added another gold by winning the 200m backstroke and setting a new world record while she was at it. Gold medal #3 was thanks to 15-year-old Katie Ledecky’s stunning win in the 800m freestyle.
