I really enjoyed my short visit to Luang Prabang and want to go back and spend longer in the sleepy little town. By luck, the hotel we stayed at was right next to the morning market. If you are not a sound sleeper, that would be bad luck; the market starts early, before the sun is up, and the locals are not quiet about it.
After mainlining a suitable amount of caffeine, we took a stroll through the market every morning. Incredible photo ops everywhere you looked. Fortunately I had my friend Noom with me, and as I often do, shot an arched eyebrow to elicit an explanation for those things vendors were peddling that I couldn’t identify. Unfortunately, like most Thais, he won’t admit when he doesn’t know something. His fall back answer for unknown foodstuff is, “Dat rice.”
I dunno. Maybe it is. Maybe in this instance he got it right. But then the snicker the vendor let out tends to make me think there may have been a bit more to the story.

It’s probably cooked rice with some savoury inside rolled in palm frond or bamboo & grilled over the fire. Would like to try it out one day…

Thanks Eduard, I figured someone out there would know.
Shame we didn’t buy one, I’d like to try it now too . . . another good reason to return to Luang Prabang!

We have something similar in Malaysia and southern Thailand. It’s glutinous rice with coconut milk and a bit of salt roasted in a bamboo tube over an open fire. Freshly cooked, it’s delicious with beef, mutton or chicken curry. Cold, it’s great with sliced mangoes or durians.

Sounds delicious XD.
Or it did until you mentioned the durian.

Well, you don’t have to eat it with durian but you really might want to try eating it my way. Back when I had a Phuket barboyfriend, he loved eating this with sliced mango after doing the naughty stuff (sometimes before, too) and he invariably did it sitting naked and freshly showered in bed. I always wondered what he thought of my favourite way of eating it – straight off his naked body! No hands, spoons or forks, either.

Well now it is starting to sound much better!
I think I’ll tell Noom I’m on a new diet.

Ha Ha. Makes sense. Have a nice snack. I was going to say ‘good dinner’ but I don’t think the rice is going to be the main meal if you eat it like that.
