France’s Benjamin Macé shows what an Olympian is made of.

I assume there’s men’s skeleton in the Olympics too, but so far I’ve only seen the women compete. And their bodies are not exactly what you would call athletic. Good breeding stock is how it was once put. I’m not sure why they participate in a sport that requires them to head face-first at 80mph down a luge course when their face is probably their best feature, but then again since thanks to that event Great Britain finally won a gold medal at Sochi I guess that explains it. You’d think Russia would have done better because those babushkas ain’t exactly what you’d call attractive either, and they certainly have the body for it.

I don’t know why you need bobsledding, the luge, and skeleton in the Olympics. They are all just take offs on sliding down a hill on an inner tube. But they do provide Olympic events for fat people who otherwise would have to participate in the Paralympic Games. And it does keep them off the ice. Which is a good thing. ‘Cuz the athletes who use the ice rink for winning gold all have bodies to die for.

France’s Benjamin Macé is a good example. A fine example in fact. The 24-year-old currently represents the French long-track Olympic speed skating team, if you can call one guy a team. His chances at winning gold, or any medal, at Sochi are just slightly better than mine.

But you can’t argue that he doesn’t have the body for it. Which is surprising. Watching the Turin Winter Olympics inspired him to become a short track speedskater. Four years later he realized his dream, competing at the Vancouver Games. He described that ordeal as the toughest of his career due to his job at a local McDonalds. From the look of it, he gave the free Big Macs a pass.

Two years later after watching a bloody crash on the course, he decided the long track was a safer event and switched. He also felt his 6’ frame was more aligned with that of a long tracker. Benj, as he is known, is not one of the top ranked skaters; his best performance was a 5th place spot at the World Cups in 2013. No problemo. With that body the world will always find a place for him.
