Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Glenn, a regular reader of this blog commented on yesterday’s post about the wood peni for sale at Thailand’s street markets that on his trip to Bhutan he’d seen not only those but paintings of ejaculating peni on the walls of buildings. He was nice enough to follow up by providing a link to his photos. I wasn’t sure if he wanted that link published – it is of an entire album of his photography from that trip – so until he gives me the okay, this one will have to suffice.
I haven’t made it to Bhutan yet, but it is on my list of places I want to visit. After seeing Glenn’s shots, it got moved up. And not just because of the phallic artwork.

I don’t mind sharing my pictures. It’s a public gallery.
I enjoyed Bhutan, but you have to have a good bit of patience. And don’t be fooled by all the propaganda about “gross national happiness”. The drives are long. The roads are narrow and more than a little scary. But it is like no where else. It will keep changing and modernizing. I also had trouble with the altitude. Never did adjust very well. So any climbing was more or less out of the question for me. So I did not make the trip to Tiger’s Nest because I knew it would be hell for me. They’ve raised the daily cost since I was there. The funny thing is that you pay per person. Which seems a little crazy. It ended up being cheaper for me as a single traveler than it would have been for two people who would have used the same vehicle, driver, guide and hotel room. There’s no way the extra person eats that much to account for the extra cost. So I paid something like $250 a day while a couple would have paid $500 per day.
But the people are quite nice (as they are in most places). Some places see a lot fewer tourists (especially in the far east of the country) so there is a good bit of curiosity. I preferred the east to the west. The food was better. It was also the case that the weather improved a lot as I moved from west to east.
It’s a lot like Mynamar in that the traditional culture won’t last forever so they are places to be seen sooner rather than later.
