At the wats in and around Chiang Mai, as common of a sight as is piles of touri shoes outside a temple’s doors is an Ubiquitous Plastic Stool performing guard duties at said temple. Foolish souls think they are unmanned chairs, that the guard stationed at the temple’s entrance to warn the unsuspecting that they must remove their shoes before entering is on a break or chasing down some scofflaw who snuck in still wearing his cherished pair of Nike. Those of us more aware of the honored place in which Thais hold their beloved Ubiquitous Plastic Stools know better. Can’t blame them: who better to guard the sanctity of the Buddha?

A classic! I am partial to the blue chairs and the scattered thongs remind us of the randomness of life… 😉

I was gonna point that out but thought it was so obvious everyone would pick up on it anyway Mitch.

I needed one of those in Bagan. My shoes got stolen there.

I’d always thought temple stairs were a great place to make a swap for a new pair of shoes. just never ran across any I liked in my size. I’ll have to remember to look closely in Burma then!
