U.S. Swimmer Nathan Adrian joins the unofficial skinny dipping team.

Recently, I mentioned in my piece about Olympic swimsuits that U.S. swimmer Ricky Berens suffered a glorious swimsuit malfunction, exposing his finely sculptured ass to the audience during his leg in the freestyle relay at the World Championships in Rome. The swimmers may not be too thrilled with Speedo’s latest competition suit, but I’m starting to greatly appreciate it. Now another U.S. hottie split his Speedo up the back too. Swimming with their ass hanging out is becoming a thing with Team USA, and I’m thrilled NBC will be covering the Games in 3D.

An inherent problem with any piece of skin tight clothing is that it leaves little room to expand. And the muscular build of swimmers needs room to bulge freely. As high tech as the new polyurethane competition swimsuits are, like a cheap knock off pair of jeans bought at a night market in SE Asia, they don’t hold up well even to normal wear. Nathan Adrian, an Olympic gold medalist who’ll undoubtedly have the opportunity to add to his medal count at the London Olympic Games, discovered just how tight the new suits are last week when crouching on the block before the start of the finals of the 100 free at the 2012 Indianapolis Grand Prix, Nathan felt an unexpected breath of fresh air blowing across his ass. His tight-fitting Speedo FS3 had split, leaving him with an exposed backside. “Bending over on the block and feeling that snap is never a good feeling,” a chuckling Adrian told a post-race interviewer.

Too late to do anything else but dive in, Nathan went on to touch the wall at a time of 48.62, more than one-tenth of a second ahead of a less exposed Olympic legend Michael Phelps. His finish was good enough to be the 11th fastest time in the world this year, and pictures of his suit malfunction immediately began bobbing to the surface. Not as revealing as those of his National teammate Ricky Berens, the photos of Nathan’s ass barely show flesh (and aren’t even worth posting) and some spoil sport threw him a towel to cover the evidence before he hopped out of the pool.

Adrian said it had never happened to him before, “not even in practice. It’s happened when I’ve been walking up to the blocks, my suit has ripped on me. But never on the block. I certainly never had to swim with one like that.” How revealing was the tear? “Stretched out, it was my full butt crack,” he said.

Nathan is known for his infectious smile and a body that seems to just go on forever.

The 23-year-old stud muffin is the current holder of the American records in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Swimming competitively since the age of 5, Bok Choy, as he is known to friends and teammates, was born in Bremerton, Washington, the son of James and Cecilia Adrian. His mother is Chinese and was born and raised in Hong Kong. His father is a retired nuclear engineer for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Adrian is currently a pre-med student at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is a five-time individual NCAA champion, winning the 50 yard freestyle in 2009 and 2011 and the 100 yard freestyle in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

The 6’ 6”, 220 lbs. hottie swam the first leg of the ×100 m freestyle relay in the qualifying heats at the 2008 Olympic Games, setting a new world record with his relay team mates. One day later that record was broken by the relay team featuring Michael Phelps, who went on to win the gold in the finals. By swimming in the heats, as a member of the national relay team Nathan earned his gold medal – at his first-ever Olympic Games – even though he did not swim in the finals. And though he has won a total of twelve medals in major international competition, ten gold, one silver, and one bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships, Bok Choy has yet to capture the attention that his illustrious teammate Phelps has garnered. Accidently showing his ass might have been a small (but tight) step toward becoming better known. Beating the pants off of Phelps (though not literally) at the 2012 Indianapolis Grand Prix should help too. If nothing else, and despite continued rumors over Phelps’ sexuality, Nathan is one of the few men in the world who can boast that he’s topped Michael.

But then a similar previous accomplishment failed to get the spotlight to shine on Nathan either. At the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine the buzz was all about Brazil’s Cesar Cielo, the 50m freestyle world record holder. Before the race started, one commentator weighed in on Nathan’s chances. “If it was 60, 70 meters, I think that Adrian might have a chance, but this guy has so much speed, so much power,” he said. In a blink of the eye, the race was over, the finish so close it looked like both swimmers hands hit the wall at the same time. But then the official times came in and the meet’s announcer, his voice ringing in shock, shouted excitedly, “Nathan Adrian just beat the fastest swimmer in history!”

Nathan won four gold medals at that competition, and then added to his collection the following year winning two golds at the NCAA Championships and a bronze and a gold at the 2011 FINA World Championship. He is the current choice for the freestyle leg of the 4×100 m medley relay, teaming with Mark Gangloff, Nick Thoman, and Michael Phelps, the gold medal winning competition at the 2011 FINAs. One of the stars on the National Team, it is expected he will be representing the U.S. at the London Games, though the roster for the Olympics won’t be decided until the Team Trials to be held in late June in Omaha.

Adrian’s talents bulge out all over.

Come July, the U.S. swimmers are expected to rack up some major medals at the Olympics. Nathan will undoubtedly be part of that effort and should score some lucrative endorsement deals too. With his mile-long legs, broad shoulders, and a bulge as impressive and huge as the crinkled smile that typically splays across his face, he looks manufactured, not born. There is no arguing that he is a stud on top of being one of the preeminent sprinters in the world.

But now I’m torn between which to include in my nightly prayers. That Speedo’s amazingly talented team of designers devote their efforts to applying their disappearing swimsuit technology to the front of their swimsuits as well as they have to the backs? Or that they spend their time coming up with equally expressive gym wear for the male gymnasts?

The epitomoe of a swimmer’s build.
