off topic, but who else can I ask— do you have insight to the idiomatic Thai use of the word “empty”? My two norng chai’s in Bangkok use it occasionally in texts/FB messages, and I don’t quite get it.

There’s a whole Wikipedia article about the meaning of Emptiness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emptiness), and it also outlines the different meanings in the Western/Christian context vs. the Eastern/Buddhist context.
The trouble with those Nong Chai in Thailand who have foreign Phee Chai, is, that they could mean either one when saying that they feel empty. 😉 So you have to figure it out from the situation or their overall state of mind at the time when they write it.

You forgot all those who say, “No picture no reply,” but have either no pictures on their own profiles – or worse still, someone else’s picture there.

Yup, that one always has bugged me too.
Or worse yet, their profile photo is a sunset or something stupid like that.
The one that I can’t figure out is those who list themself as a top only but then their profile photo is of their ass.
About the sunsets, a friend who has exactly that says it’s supposed to suggest his romantic aspirations since not all gay guys register on dating services to look merely for sex but also for people with whom they can fall in love and have longterm relationships (UNLIKE me, he added with just the faintest bit of a superior smile) . Yeah, right.
The tops with pictures of asses fall into two categories (I have friends in both) who EITHER say that it represents what type of ass they’re looking for OR that “top” means they sit on top of their partners’ dicks, so they’re showing what they can offer to anyone who’ll let them do just that.
Need I say that they ALL feel perfectly justified posting “No Pic No Reply” on their profiles?
We remain friends because I think that anyone stupid enough to contact them – or reply to their “Hi” messages – deserves them, so it’s none of my business to say more to them. I don’t suppose they’ll agree, however.
Okay I get the friends not sex photo – but then don’t demand one of the other guy.
As for a photo of your ass representing the ass you are looking for . . . is ‘then go fuck yourself’ too easy of a reply?
‘don’t demand one from the other guy’ is hoping for a little too much courtesy from children of a lesser cod I think.
I don’t post my picture on some dating websites but if I contact another guy, I’ll always attach my picture. When one of these idiots contacts me and asks me for my pic without doing the same first, I tell them in no uncertain terms that it’s just simple courtesy to do that. I don’t often get a reply after that, I can tell you, though I have been pleasantly surprised once or twice when people apologised and attached their photo.
However, I have never hit it off with anyone from my own country and I doubt that’s going to happen any time soon. i’m too much of a free spirit in some ways too uptight about old-fashioned values in others for my countrymen to feel comfortable with too long.

Foreigners can live in Thailand and not know how everyday Thai people really feel about foreigners in general, gays in particular (http://www.fridae.asia/newsfeatures/2012/03/02/11582.thailand-the-truth-about-tolerance), blacks, etc. Amazing ignorance!

The general ignorance of the sexpat community has always floored me. Not long ago Da Boss posted a comment on his bored about the wai and wasn’t even sure what it was called.
Jabba’s poll proves that point (though I admit the only poll of his I remember was about age and one of the ‘selections’ for the age of boys members’ liked went as low as 8.)

yeah that one always confounds me too.
Their dick pics are often not even their own…I once saw one where Jeff Stryker’s dick was posted as his profile picture. A little wish fulfillmen, i guess.
