Puerto Rico’s Tommy Ramos

Huh. With Puerto Rico being a Commonwealth of the United States, I just assumed their athletes would be on Team USA. I mean John Orozco is Puerto Rican and he competes for the U.S., so who was to know? My bad. And a good thing too: as Puerto Rico’s sole Olympic gymnastics competitor, Tommy Ramos did not get caught up in the disastrous team finals during which the US team totally choked.

The 26-year-old, 5’ 5” hottie with the smouldering good looks burst onto the international scene representing his native country at the 2002 Junior Pan-American Games where he won the gold medal on high bar. Two years later he won bronze on the parallel bars and a silver on both rings and high bar at the Bulgaria Gymnastic Championships, and was ranked at the 13th spot by the International Gymnastic Federation for the high bar. He has since competed for Puerto Rico at several World Championships.

A six-time All-American while competing for Penn State, Ramos played a prominent role in helping the Nittany Lions win the national championship in 2007 and a Big Ten title in 2008. A two-time Big Ten rings champion, he held the Penn State record in that event set at the 2008 National Collegiate Championships.

Tommy qualified for his Olympic berth at the London Test event last January, finishing in third place and winning the bronze medal in rings. He will compete in the finals for that event having placed sixth during the Olympic qualifying rounds last weekend, the only individual event apparatus the US men failed to qualify for. Maybe he should have competed on our team.
